Heniochus Black & White Butterflyfish (Heniochus acuminatus) - Longfin Bannerfish Description
The Heniochus Black & White Butterflyfish, also known as the Longfin Bannerfish, is a striking marine species characterized by its long, flowing white dorsal filament, which gracefully sways like a banner in the water. Its base color is a bright white, complemented by two broad, jet-black vertical bands that provide a bold contrast. The soft dorsal and caudal fins exhibit a vibrant yellow hue, while distinct black markings can be found just above the eyes, adding to its dramatic appearance. Despite belonging to the Butterflyfish family, members of the Heniochus genus are more commonly referred to as Bannerfish due to their elongated dorsal fin.
Tank Requirements and Compatibility
This species thrives in a 125-gallon or larger aquarium and can be kept with other peaceful tankmates, including other Heniochus, if all individuals are introduced simultaneously to reduce territorial behavior. Given their social nature, they can coexist well if these conditions are met.
Reef Compatibility and Diet
While visually captivating, the Heniochus Black & White Butterflyfish is not considered reef-safe, as it may nip at corals and other invertebrates. Its diet primarily consists of small, meaty foods, supplemented with herbivore preparations to ensure balanced nutrition.
